Featherston - Lifestyle Garden

The clients were keen to create a new home and garden in Featherston. They had bought a block of land and cleared the pine trees. A new house build and garages were planned. Initially the design process involved a boundary planting scheme of wind hardy native trees and shrubs. The next stage was to assist with the siting of the house, garage and driveway to optimise access, sunshine and good views. Once this was established the main garden design could begin. This semi rural site has views to the nearby hills and also receives some strong winds. The clients desired a garden that would grow well in the site conditions and be easy to maintain.

Privacy was also key in this design. A large oval lawn was positioned in the front of the property. The areas of native plantings were designed to create privacy and good outlooks from the house. A deck, screens and a pergola were part of the design. Grass paths link various garden areas. A vegetable garden, small orchard, citrus area and an entrance garden were all part of the design. The excellent planting and maintenance by the owners has help create a lovely garden that works well with their new home and the surrounding landscape.

Hilltop Garden

The clients required a landscape design for this newly built house on a small section. The section on a steep street has lovely views to the hills with late afternoon sun. To maximise on the views a low deck was planned. Paving provides an area for a BBQ and washing line. The selected plants are coping well with the clay soil and create a low maintenance, semi formal garden, perfect for entertaining. Timber slat fencing provides security from the driveway and some privacy from the street. Now the clients can relax on the deck and enjoy the pleasant views.

Gardens

Deco Apartment Courtyard

This small garden in an art deco apartment block was transformed into a useable seating area and garden. The planting design included a mix of flowering shrubs and informal hedges. The exotic and native plants ensures that the garden changes through the seasons. New paving stones, fresh paint and garden furniture has completed the design.

High Commission Garden

A fresh planting design was the brief for this Wellington High Commission property, formerly an overgrown cottage garden. The client requested that some of the plantings be suitable for use in floral displays. Existing exotic trees have been carefully pruned while some remnants of the cottage garden such as the aquilegias and hellebores bring a show of colour in this now semi- formal garden.

Courtyard Garden

This project required creating a link from the former tiled patio to a newly designed raised garden,  A section of the existing concrete wall (once completely dividing the section) was cut out to allow for access between the courtyard and the new garden area. The garden includes a lawn, lavender hedges and a seating near scented climbing star Jasmine. The upper garden now also provides for glimpses to the harbour.

Rural Garden

This home just out of Featherston had recently been renovated and required a low maintenance garden for the owners to entertain and relax in. The design includes semi-formal hedges of corokia and choisya ternata. Copper beach and silver birches have been planted as feature trees in the front of the property.  Existing large dahlias were replanted into the new gardens providing spectacular colour in summer. The back garden, once uninviting, now includes a paved entertaining area complete with pizza oven and a raised vegetable garden.

Entrance Garden

The clients required new gardens for their renovated villa and entrance area in Kelburn. Flowers and easy care gardens along with fruit trees was the brief. A mix of shrubs and perennials now create bursts of colour through the seasons. Native shrubs and ferns were planted in the shady raised garden by the entertainment courtyard along with trailing star jasmine and white azaleas.

Urban Valley Garden

The family had renovated the villa in Brooklyn now was the time to do the garden. The back section retaining wall was in disrepair and the outdoor areas lacked places to relax or entertain in. A prominant steep bank up to the boundary on one side of the back property required plantings to thrive in clay soil. New gardens were designer throughout the property. The planting is a mix of seasonal colour, hardy pantings for the bank and the native plants to provide structure and texture. New timber retaining walls now provide a terraced area for a raised vegetable garden. The design for a deck and small courtyard were included and integrate nicely into the overall design. The clients now have an elegant urban garden retreat.
